About Our Wood Sculptures
A wood sculpture is a work carved, turned or built from timber, and the grain is part of the design. Growth rings, knots and shifts of colour run through every piece, so two sculptures cut to the same pattern never read quite alike. Wood is warm to the touch and light for its size, and it is one of the oldest materials sculptors have worked.
Our collection is led by contemporary abstract work. Carved crescents rise from slim plinths, twin flames climb to 165cm, faceted totems stand at 160cm and 185cm, and the Tempest Drift forms twist upward to 222cm. Alongside them sit figurative pieces, stallions built from stacked and slatted timber and a boy playing the trumpet on a buffalo's back, with architectural carvings of a torii gate, a temple canopy and a pagoda.
Several designs pair timber with a second material. The hand-turned vases are veined with blue resin, the hanging columns set carved wood against clear resin, and small landscape blocks rise from a wooden ridge into snowy peaks of resin. For more work in these materials see our resin sculptures, and for pieces made to be suspended, our hanging sculptures.
Wood is at its best indoors, where its colour and finish stay as they left the workshop. A tall carved form suits a hallway, a stair landing or the corner of a living room, and the vases and bowls sit well on a console or in a lit niche. You will find more contemporary work in our abstract sculptures and organic sculptures, and timber for the wall in our wood wall art.
Every wood sculpture we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch for advice on scale and placement, or to commission a piece to your own brief.
FAQs
What is a wood sculpture?
A wood sculpture is a three-dimensional work carved, shaped or assembled from timber. Some are cut from a single piece, others are built up from slats or stacked layers, and some pair the wood with resin or steel. Because grain, knots and growth rings run through the material, each piece carries its own pattern even when it follows a set design.
Can wood sculptures be placed outdoors?
Almost all of our wood sculptures are made for indoor display, where the timber and its finish are protected from rain, frost and strong sun. A few, such as the slatted stallions, are rated for indoor and outdoor use. Ask us about a particular setting and we will advise.
How are the wood and resin pieces made?
The vases are hand-turned from wood and set with drifts of blue resin, and the hanging columns join a carved wood body to clear resin. In each the two materials are worked and finished as one form, so the line runs on from timber to resin without a break.
How large are the pieces?
The range runs from a 20cm resin and wood piece to the Reclining Slatted Wood Sculpture at 350cm. Many of the abstract forms stand between 100cm and 190cm, a height that suits a hallway or the corner of a room, and the vases run from 30cm to 70cm. Every piece is made to order, so the scale can be adjusted.
How should I care for a wood sculpture?
Dust with a soft, dry cloth and keep the piece away from radiators, open fires and long hours of direct sun, which can dry and fade timber. Wipe away any spill straight away. Beyond that, an indoor wood sculpture needs very little attention.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is carved or built by hand to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, with free worldwide shipping.
