Organic Sculptures

An organic sculpture takes its logic from growth rather than geometry. Nothing repeats, nothing is symmetrical, and the surface swells and tapers the way a shell or a river stone does. Because there is no module or grid to check it against, the form has to be right by eye alone, which makes this the least forgiving work we make.

Three quarters of the collection is fibreglass, and there is a practical reason: organic forms are large, curved and hollow, and laying them up over a mould is the only way to build a two-metre continuous curve that a person can still lift. Resin covers the smaller pieces and polished steel the reflective ones, where a curved mirror surface does something no other material can.

Nearly all of it is abstract, and around half is contemporary in treatment, so this is where to look for a sculpture that carries no subject into a room at all. These pieces want space and side light. A curve reads through the shadow that travels across it, so a form pushed into a corner under flat overhead lighting loses most of what it is doing.
