Devotional sculpture is bought for a purpose rather than a room, and that changes what matters. The iconography is fixed by centuries of tradition, the people who see it will know exactly what it should look like, and it will usually stand in a church, a memorial garden or a place of remembrance rather than a sitting room.

Almost every piece here is cast bronze, many on stone or granite bases. Bronze is the traditional material for devotional work for reasons beyond reverence: it holds fine detail in hands and drapery, it stands outdoors in a churchyard indefinitely, and it deepens with age rather than degrading.

These are large pieces, many at or above life size, because devotional sculpture is generally sited outdoors or in a substantial interior where it needs to read at distance and above eye level.
