Leather Art

Leather is an unusual thing to find on a wall, and that is most of its appeal. It absorbs sound rather than bouncing it, takes a fold and holds it, and carries a depth of colour that flat paint cannot reach. In a hard room of plaster, glass and stone it is the one surface that softens the acoustics as well as the look.

The work here is formed rather than printed. Hide is cut, folded, woven, quilted, stitched and stretched over shaped grounds, so the composition is built from the material itself. A quarter of the collection sets leather against worked metal or iron for contrast between the soft and the hard, and a similar share pairs it with acrylic or timber.

Almost everything stands proud of the wall, which puts most of this collection within our 3D wall art range as well. The character is contemporary and largely abstract, with a strong geometric strand of woven and tessellated panels. White and black lead, with blue, gold and green running through. Most pieces run 80cm or larger and nearly half pass 160cm, and leather suits big walls particularly well because the surface stays interesting at distance.
