About Our Hallway Art
A hallway is the one place art is never sat with. It is passed, usually at an angle, usually from close range, and often several times a day without being looked at directly. That makes it the best place in a house for a piece that rewards a glance rather than a study, and the worst place for anything that needs distance to resolve.
Depth is the first constraint and most people ignore it. In a corridor under about a metre wide, a piece projecting more than a few centimetres becomes something to walk into, particularly at shoulder height. Check the stated depth before anything else. Slatted, folded and shallow relief work suits a narrow hall; deeply projecting sculptural pieces belong in a wide entrance hall or a landing.
Light is the second. Halls are often the darkest space in a house, with no window and one overhead fitting, and that is where reflective and illuminated work earns its keep. A mirrored piece throws borrowed light down the corridor and makes it feel wider; an illuminated one solves the lighting and the art in one go. Browse those in mirror art and LED and neon art.
Because the viewing distance is short, this is the room where texture beats scale. You will see the surface of a piece here more closely than anywhere else in the house, so carved timber, hammered metal and woven leather all read properly. Sets of smaller panels work well along a length of wall. See 3D wall art, wood wall art and wall sculptures for the pieces that suit.
Every piece we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch if you would like help planning a run of pieces along a corridor.
FAQs
How much can art project in a narrow hallway?
Very little. In a corridor under about a metre wide, anything more than a few centimetres deep becomes an obstacle at shoulder height. Every product page gives the depth, and it is the first thing to check for this room.
What works in a dark hallway?
Reflective and illuminated pieces. A mirrored work throws borrowed light along the corridor and makes it read as wider, and an illuminated piece solves both the lighting and the artwork. Dark matt finishes disappear in a hall with no window.
Should I hang one piece or a run of several?
A run works particularly well here, because you pass the wall rather than facing it. Space the pieces evenly, align their centres at a consistent height and treat the gaps as part of the composition.
How high should hallway art hang?
Centre at around 155cm to 160cm, the same as most rooms, since the sightline is standing. In a stairwell, follow the line of the stairs rather than keeping the pieces level with each other.
Does texture matter more in a hallway?
Yes. The viewing distance is the shortest in the house, so you see the surface of a piece properly. Carved timber, hammered metal and woven leather all reward that closeness in a way a printed image does not.
How is it made, and how long does it take?
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
