Cats have been sculpted for longer than almost any other domestic animal, and the reason is the pose. A seated cat is already a sculpture before anyone touches it: symmetrical, upright, self-contained, with a silhouette that reads instantly. The Egyptians worked that out three thousand years ago and it has not needed improving since.

Cast bronze accounts for well over half this collection, patinated by hand and made for permanent outdoor display. Stone and resin cover the rest, with a smaller run of contemporary treatments. Bronze suits the subject particularly well because a hand-applied patina picks out the change of plane along a spine or a folded leg in a way a painted finish flattens.

The range runs from seated and curled domestic cats to stretching and walking figures, Egyptian-influenced pieces, and stylised modern forms. This is a subject that works at modest scale, which is unusual in our catalogue. A life-size seated cat is around 40cm, and at that size it sits on a step, a wall or a console rather than needing floor space. Larger versions work as garden pieces among planting.
