About Our Contemporary & Modern Sculptures
Contemporary sculpture is not a style, it is everything being made now, and this is the largest collection on the site because most of what we make belongs to it. What holds it together is not a look but a set of freedoms: materials the classical tradition did not have, colour it did not use, and no obligation to depict anything at all.
Fibreglass and resin do most of the making, and that is the enabling fact rather than a detail. Neither existed as a sculptural material before the twentieth century, and between them they allow scale without weight, saturated colour, chrome and lacquer finishes, and forms that cast metal could not support. Polished steel covers the reflective work.
Abstract form is the largest single strand, with pop art treatments, geometric and faceted work, and simplified figures alongside. Browse those in abstract sculptures, pop art sculptures and geometric sculptures.
Most of the range is for interiors, and the scale spread is wide enough to cover a desk piece and an atrium installation. Because so much of it is our own or our collaborators' design, custom colours, bespoke scales and commissions are more freely available here than in our traditional ranges. See indoor sculptures and statues and sculptures and statues.
Every piece we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch about custom colours, scales or commissions.
FAQs
What is the difference between contemporary and modern?
In art history, modern usually means roughly 1860 to 1970 and contemporary means work made since. In practice most people use both to mean current design, which is what this collection is.
Why so much fibreglass and resin?
They are the enabling materials. Neither existed as a sculptural medium before the twentieth century, and between them they allow large scale without weight, saturated colour, and chrome and lacquer finishes that cast metal cannot take.
Can I commission a custom colour or scale?
More freely here than in our traditional ranges, because so much of this work is our own or our collaborators' design. Custom colours, bespoke sizes and new commissions are all available.
Which pieces can go outdoors?
The stainless steel and metal work. Fibreglass and resin pieces are interior only, since sprayed finishes fade and chalk in permanent sun and rain.
What sizes are available?
The widest spread of any collection we make, from desk pieces under 30cm to atrium installations over four metres, since the materials allow both ends comfortably.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
