About Our Dragon Statues and Sculptures
The dragon is one of the oldest subjects in sculpture, and it means different things in East and West. In Chinese tradition it is a creature of water and sky, long-bodied and usually wingless, linked with strength, good fortune and imperial authority, and often shown reaching for a flaming pearl. In European legend it is the winged adversary of the hero, the beast Saint George rides out to meet. Our collection carries both traditions at full scale.
In white marble there are Chinese dragons coiled over carved clouds and waves, from 80cm to the Cloud-Surging Dragon at 260cm, with a guardian dragon tortoise and a seated winged dragon in black marble. In bronze the range runs from 45cm dragon heads to life-size Chinese dragons at 220cm and a rearing winged dragon at 350cm, with the great narrative groups: Saint George and the dragon, armoured knights on rearing horses, and a classical hero at grips with his dragon. Carved jade adds dragon arcs, scrolls and discs in archaic forms.
Material decides where a dragon can live. Marble and bronze are made for the open air, the stone keeping its carved scales crisp and the bronze deepening into a living patina, while jade belongs indoors, seen close to and in good light. See the wider ranges in our marble sculptures, bronze sculptures and jade sculptures.
Two Chinese dragons ordered as a pair can flank a gateway or the steps to a door, a coiling dragon makes a focal point at the end of a garden path, and a dragon fountain brings moving water into a courtyard. For more pieces that hold a garden together see our garden statues and bronze fountains, and for other creatures of myth, our bronze mythology statues.
Every dragon statue we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch for advice on scale and siting, or to commission a dragon to your own brief.
FAQs
What does a dragon statue symbolise?
In Chinese tradition the dragon is a benevolent creature linked with strength, good fortune and imperial authority, and with water and rain. In European legend it is usually the adversary a hero must overcome, as in the story of Saint George. Our Chinese dragons follow the first tradition, and our winged dragons and knightly groups the second.
What is the difference between a Chinese dragon and a Western dragon?
A Chinese dragon has a long, scaled, serpentine body, clawed legs and a whiskered, horned head, usually without wings, and it is often shown among clouds or waves with a pearl. A Western dragon is heavier in the body, with broad bat-like wings, and is usually shown rearing or seated. Our collection includes both, in marble and in bronze.
Are dragon statues suitable for outdoors?
Our marble and bronze dragons are made for gardens, courtyards and entrances, and both weather well: marble softens in tone over the years and bronze develops a patina. The carved jade pieces and the gold dragon pair are for indoor display.
How large are the dragon statues?
The range runs from a 36cm pair of gold Chinese dragons to the Armoured Knight and Dragon at 450cm. The marble dragons stand from 80cm to 260cm, the bronze Chinese dragons from 150cm to 220cm, and the Saint George groups reach 300cm and 350cm. Every piece is made to order, so the scale can be adjusted.
Which material should I choose?
Choose white marble for a classical carved look that reads clearly against planting or dark stone, and bronze for dramatic poses, open wings and fine scale detail that stone cannot support. Jade suits an interior where the piece can be seen close to. We are happy to advise on material and scale for your setting.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is carved or cast by hand to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, with free worldwide shipping.
