Bedroom Art

Bedroom art is seen in two states nothing else has to survive: lying down, and half awake. That rules out a good deal. Anything busy, high-contrast or demanding is wrong here, not because it is bad but because it is the last thing you see at night and the first in the morning, and it needs to be restful at both.

The canonical position is above the bed, and it is the one place where the furniture dictates the width absolutely: aim for around two thirds the width of the bed, centred on it. A common alternative is the wall you face from the pillow, which is often better if the headboard is tall or upholstered. Either way the piece is viewed from lower down than in any other room, so hang slightly lower than instinct suggests.

Material does real work here. Timber and leather absorb sound as well as light, which takes the hardness out of a room with a wooden floor, and illuminated pieces double as low-level light where a lamp would be too bright. Browse those in wood wall art, leather art and LED and neon art.
