About Our Figure Art
The human figure on a wall is a harder proposition than most subjects, because everyone is an expert in it. A slightly wrong proportion in an abstract composition goes unnoticed; a slightly wrong shoulder does not. That is why the strongest figurative wall work tends to abstract deliberately rather than aim at likeness and fall short.
The range leans that way. Silhouettes and outline forms, wire and line-drawn figures, partial reliefs where a figure emerges from the panel, and a substantial astronaut group at nearly three in ten pieces which sits at the boundary between figure and character. Two thirds of the collection is dimensional.
Mixed media leads, with resin, timber and cast acrylic behind. There are distinct retro and Scandinavian strands, and the palette is broader than in our abstract ranges because a figure carries colour more easily than a pure form does. Browse the emerging figures in wall sculptures, the space subjects in astronaut sculptures and the period work in retro art.
Scale here is more modest than most of our wall ranges, with over half the collection under 80cm, which suits the subject: a figure at human scale on a wall can feel confrontational, while a smaller one reads as a study. Sets work well. See the wider collection in wall art and wall decor and the freestanding figures in sculptures and statues.
Every piece we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch if you would like help choosing a piece or a group.
FAQs
What kinds of figures are in the range?
Silhouettes and outline forms, wire and line-drawn figures, partial reliefs where a figure emerges from the panel, and a large astronaut group that sits between figure and character.
Why is so much of it abstracted rather than realistic?
Because everyone reads the human form expertly. A small error in an abstract composition passes unnoticed; a small error in a shoulder or a hand does not. Deliberate abstraction is the stronger choice for wall work.
What size suits a figurative piece?
Smaller than you might expect. Over half this collection is under 80cm, because a figure at human scale on a wall can feel confrontational in a domestic room, while a smaller one reads as a study.
Do the pieces work in sets?
Well. Two or three figures at different heights or in related poses read as a series, which suits this subject better than most. Keep the spacing even and the treatment consistent.
What is it made from?
Mixed media, resin, timber and cast acrylic, with two thirds of the range standing proud of the wall. There are distinct retro and Scandinavian strands within it.
How is it made, and how long does it take?
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
