Horse Sculptures & Statues

The horse is the hardest animal in sculpture and always has been. A rearing figure puts several hundred kilos of bronze onto two hind legs, and getting that to stand without looking braced is the problem every equestrian sculptor since antiquity has had to solve. It is also why a good horse reads as movement even when it is standing still.

Cast bronze accounts for nearly three quarters of this collection for exactly that reason: it is the only material with the tensile strength to hold a raised leg or a full gallop without a visible support. The rest is carved marble and stone for the classical pieces, which are generally shown standing or walking because stone cannot do what bronze can.

The range covers rearing and galloping horses, standing and grazing figures, mares with foals, heads and busts, and horse-and-rider groups including Roman and mounted classical subjects. These are large pieces. Most are made for permanent outdoor display, and a horse at life size is around 250cm, which needs open ground rather than a courtyard to read properly.
