Bronze Buddha Statues & Buddha Heads

The Buddha head is a sculptural tradition in its own right rather than a fragment of a larger figure. Heads were carved and cast as complete works across South and Southeast Asia for centuries, and they read differently from a seated figure: a full Buddha establishes a scene, while a head at scale is a presence you meet at eye level.

That is why so much of this collection is heads, and why they run large. Several stand at 150cm to 200cm, which is the scale at which the elongated earlobes, the tightly coiled hair and the downward gaze resolve properly. Below about a metre the same forms flatten into decoration.

Cast bronze does nearly all of the work here, and it is the traditional material for good reason. It holds fine detail in the hair curls and the folds of the robe that stone loses at scale, and it patinates outdoors into exactly the greens and browns that Buddhist statuary acquires over decades in the open. Placement follows the tradition rather than the decor. A Buddha sits raised rather than directly on the ground, faces into a space rather than out of it, and is not placed in a bathroom.
