About Our Nordic Art
Scandinavian design solved a specific problem: how to make a room feel warm when there is very little daylight for half the year. The answers were pale timber, restrained colour, honest materials and forms simple enough not to tire the eye. Those principles travel, which is why Nordic work suits a British winter as well as a Swedish one.
The range is built around that palette. Pale and limed timber leads, with mixed media, cast acrylic, woven leather and sandstone behind it. White dominates, with soft blue, sage green and grey running through, and almost nothing loud. Nine in ten pieces stand proud of the wall, because texture is how this style creates interest without adding colour. Browse by material in wood wall art.
The work is mostly abstract with a strong geometric strand, and there is more figurative and botanical content here than in our other style ranges, along with a distinct playful element that makes this the one collection with a real presence in childrens rooms. See the quieter neighbouring styles in wabi sabi art and Zen art, and the wider dimensional range in 3D wall art.
Scale is more modest here than elsewhere in our catalogue, which is true to the style: most pieces run 80cm or under and sets of smaller panels are common. That suits the rooms Nordic design was made for, where a wall is shared with a window and furniture rather than standing empty. For larger statement pieces in a similar spirit see organic art.
Every piece we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch if you would like help composing a group of panels for a wall.
FAQs
What makes wall art Scandinavian?
A restrained palette, honest natural materials and simple form. Pale timber, soft blues and greens, plenty of white and texture instead of pattern. The style came out of designing for long dark winters, where a room needs to feel warm without being busy.
What is the difference between Nordic and wabi sabi?
They share restraint but differ in finish. Nordic work tends toward clean edges, pale timber and a slightly cooler palette; wabi sabi accepts irregularity, rough texture and asymmetry as the point of the piece rather than a flaw.
Does Nordic art suit small rooms?
Particularly well. Most of this collection runs 80cm or under, and grouping two or three smaller panels reads better in a modest room than one large piece. The pale palette also keeps a small space feeling open.
Is it suitable for a childs room?
Yes, and this is the one range where a fifth of the collection is designed with that in mind. The playful pieces still sit within the same restrained palette, so they work in a nursery without dating as the child grows.
What materials are used?
Mostly pale and limed timber, with mixed media, cast acrylic, woven leather and sandstone alongside. Everything is cut, carved or assembled by hand rather than printed.
How is it made, and how long does it take?
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
