Religious Statues

Devotional sculpture asks something different of a maker than decorative work does. The subject is fixed by centuries of iconography, the audience knows exactly what it should look like, and the piece will very often stand in a place of worship or remembrance rather than a room. That is why almost all of this collection is cast bronze, and why it is made at the scale it is.

Nearly every piece here is bronze, a good number set on stone or granite bases. Bronze is the traditional material for devotional work for practical reasons as much as reverence: it holds fine detail in hands and drapery, it will stand outdoors in a churchyard or garden indefinitely, and it deepens with age rather than degrading. Each piece is cast, chased and patinated by hand.

The range covers the Christian tradition most fully, with Christ, the Virgin Mary, the Sacred Heart, saints, crucifixions and praying figures, alongside angels and cherubs. There is also a Buddhist group and a smaller set of classical deities. This is the largest work we make by proportion: more than eight in ten pieces stand over 160cm, because devotional sculpture is generally sited outdoors or in a large interior where it needs to read at distance and above eye level.
