Geometric Art

Geometry is the oldest decorative language there is, and the reason it keeps coming back is that repetition reads as order. A tessellated panel or a run of arcs gives the eye a rule to follow, which is restful in a way a free-form composition is not. It is also the safest kind of art to live with, because a pattern does not date the way an image does.

Almost everything here is built rather than drawn. Timber battens, cut acrylic tiles, folded metal, woven leather and formed mixed media are assembled into grids, hexagons, fans, radial discs and interlocking scale patterns. Nine in ten pieces stand proud of the wall, so the geometry throws its own shadow and the pattern deepens as the light moves.

Wood and acrylic lead the materials at roughly a third each, with metal and leather behind them, which means the same pattern language is available warm or cold depending on the room. Geometric work rewards being hung square and given room, since the pattern is the subject and a crooked hang shows immediately. Most pieces run 80cm or larger and a third pass 160cm, and repeated forms scale up better than almost anything else.
