About Our 3D Wall Art
The difference between a picture and a relief is shadow. A flat work shows you the same thing at nine in the morning and nine at night; a dimensional one changes all day, because the light moving across a room moves across the piece as well. That is the whole argument for 3D wall art, and it is why it holds attention longer than anything printed.
Everything here stands proud of the wall. Some pieces are shallow, built from slatted timber, folded metal or raised plaster; others project several centimetres in carved relief, applied stone or sculpted forms. Around a third combine two or more materials in a single work, setting timber against metal or acrylic against textured ground, which is where the deepest shadow lines come from.
Texture is the other half of it. These are surfaces you want to run a hand across: carved grain, hammered sheet, crackle glaze, woven fibre, raised plaster and cast resin. That is a quality no photograph fully conveys, so it is worth knowing that nearly every piece in this collection carries it. Browse the same work by material in wood wall art and metal wall art.
Most of the range is abstract or geometric, in a largely white, blue and black palette, at scales from 30cm panels up past 160cm. Relief needs a little more room than a flat piece, and it wants light from one side rather than straight on. For work that leaves the wall altogether, our wall sculptures project further still, and for the flatter end of the range see abstract art and geometric art.
Every piece we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. FAQs
What is 3D wall art?
Work that projects from the wall rather than sitting flat on it. That covers shallow relief in slatted timber or folded metal through to deep carved and sculpted pieces standing several centimetres proud. The point of it is shadow, which changes through the day as the light does.
How far does it stand off the wall?
It varies by piece, from around a centimetre for slatted and folded work up to several centimetres for carved relief and applied forms. Every product page gives the depth, which is worth checking against a hallway or any position where people pass close.
How should it be lit?
From one side rather than straight on. Directional light raking across the surface is what creates the shadow the piece was designed around; flat frontal lighting flattens it out. A picture light set slightly off-centre or an angled spot works well.
Is textured wall art hard to keep clean?
Not particularly, but dust settles on ledges rather than sliding off. A soft brush or a dry microfibre cloth run lightly across the relief once in a while is enough. Avoid sprays and water, which sit in the recesses and mark.
How large does it come?
From around 30cm to over 160cm, with most pieces between 80cm and 130cm. Relief work benefits from a little more surrounding wall than a flat piece, so allow more clearance than you would for a print of the same size.
How is it made, and how long does it take?
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
