About Our Figurative Sculptures
Figurative sculpture is the oldest thing people make and the hardest to make well, because everyone reading it is an expert. We all know how a shoulder sits and how weight transfers through a hip, so the errors that pass unnoticed in an abstract form are obvious here. That is why the tradition rewards either real anatomical command or deliberate abstraction, and very little in between.
This collection covers both ends. On one side, classical and traditional work in bronze and marble: standing and seated figures, dancers, workers, portrait busts and torsos, carved or cast to the standards the subject demands. On the other, contemporary treatments in resin and fibreglass where the figure is simplified, faceted or reduced to gesture, including our astronaut and Iconify ranges.
Bronze and marble account for well over half the making, which is why more than half the collection is rated for outdoor display, unusually high for figurative work. Browse the classical end in Greek and Roman statues and marble sculptures and statues, and the contemporary end in Iconify sculptures and astronaut sculptures.
Scale matters more here than with most subjects. A figure below about 120cm reads as an object; at life size it reads as a presence, and the room changes around it. Nearly half the collection stands over 160cm for that reason. Portrait and memorial commissions are a significant part of what we do. See bust and torso sculptures and life size and large statues.
Every figurative sculpture we make is cast, carved or moulded to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch about portrait commissions or a piece to your own brief.
FAQs
What does figurative mean?
Work that depicts the human form, whether realistically or in simplified and abstracted treatments. It is the opposite of abstract sculpture, which has no subject at all.
Do you take portrait commissions?
Yes, and they are a significant part of our work. Portrait busts and full figures can be commissioned from photographs, in marble or bronze, and memorial pieces are among the most common requests.
Which pieces can go outdoors?
More than half the collection, which is unusually high for figurative work. The bronze, marble and stone pieces are made for permanent exterior display; the resin and fibreglass figures should be kept indoors.
What size should a figure be?
Life size if the space allows. Below around 120cm a figure reads as an object; at life size it reads as a presence and changes the room. Nearly half this collection stands over 160cm.
Why is so much contemporary work simplified?
Because everyone reads the human form expertly, so small anatomical errors are glaring. Deliberate abstraction sidesteps that entirely, which is why contemporary figurative work either commits to full realism or moves decisively away from it.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is cast, carved or moulded by hand to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
