Lion Statues & Sculptures

The lion has guarded entrances for four thousand years, from Assyrian palaces to Georgian country houses to the front of a Chinese temple. It is the oldest architectural convention still in use, and it works because a lion at a gate reads as intention rather than decoration. Placed in pairs it does something no single sculpture can.

Six in ten pieces here are cast bronze, with carved marble and stone making up most of the rest. All three are permanent outdoor materials, which matters because this is almost entirely exterior work. Around six in ten are classical in treatment: recumbent lions in the European tradition, seated and standing guardians, and the Chinese guardian pairs with a paw on a brocade ball.

Scale needs to answer the architecture rather than the garden. A lion flanking steps or a gateway should read at the height of the opening it guards, which usually means larger than instinct suggests. Most of the collection is sized for that.
