Elephant Statues & Sculptures

An elephant is the one animal that works as sculpture at almost any size. At 30cm it is a considered object on a console; at life size it is the largest thing most people will ever put in a garden, and the scale itself becomes the subject. Very few animals survive that range without looking either fussy or crude at one end of it.

Just over half the collection is cast bronze, made for permanent outdoor display and patinated by hand. Fibreglass covers the very large contemporary pieces, where weight would otherwise make a life-size animal impractical to place, and carved marble holds the classical and Asian-influenced work.

The treatments split between traditional and contemporary. On one side naturalistic standing and walking elephants, mothers with calves, and Asian temple elephants; on the other stylised and abstract forms, geometric faceting and bold single-colour finishes. Consider access before scale. A life-size elephant is around 300cm long and needs a route to its position that a vehicle can reach, which rules out many walled gardens.
