Abstract Sculptures

An abstract sculpture is the only kind that has to justify itself entirely through form. There is no subject to fall back on, no likeness to admire, nothing to recognise. What is left is proportion, surface, weight and the way the piece changes as you walk around it, and that is a much harder test than a good likeness.

It is also why abstract work is the largest part of what we make. A figure or an animal brings associations with it into a room; an abstract form does not, which makes it the easiest sculpture to place and the least likely to date. Nearly all of it is our own or our collaborators' design rather than a reproduction of anything.

Fibreglass does most of the making at close to seven in ten pieces, because abstract forms are often large, curved and hollow, which is exactly what fibreglass is good at. Resin covers the smaller work and stainless steel the reflective pieces. Around a fifth of the range is organic in treatment, flowing and curved rather than angular. Most of the collection is for interiors, and scale spread is wide: a third sits between 30cm and 79cm for a console or shelf, and over a quarter passes 160cm for atriums and double-height rooms.
