Zen Art

Zen work is defined by what it leaves out. Empty space is treated as part of the composition rather than as background waiting to be filled, and a single considered form is allowed to carry a whole panel. That restraint is much harder to make convincingly than a busy piece, because there is nothing to hide behind.

Landscape is the strongest subject here at nearly a third of the collection: mountains, water, mist and horizon lines reduced to their essentials. Beyond that the range is largely abstract, with architectural and botanical work alongside. Four in five pieces are dimensional, because in this idiom texture does the work that colour does elsewhere.

These pieces need room around them, which is the one demand the style makes of a wall. A Zen work hung tight between a door and a cupboard loses the thing it is doing.
