Metal Sculptures

Metal does two opposite things well, and this collection covers both. Polished, it reflects everything around it and effectively disappears into its setting. Brushed or patinated, it does the reverse and reads as solid mass. The same form in the same alloy can be either, which is a choice worth making deliberately rather than by default.

Stainless steel accounts for more than three quarters of the range, which is what makes it an outdoor collection: it does not corrode, needs no sealing and looks the same in twenty years. Nineteen in twenty pieces are rated for permanent exterior display, the highest proportion of any material range we make.

The work is largely abstract and organic, with flowing folded forms, spheres and rings, twisted sheet and a run of stylised animals. Around a fifth is animal subject matter. Siting matters more with metal than with any other material, because a reflective piece borrows its appearance from its surroundings. Against planting, water or a facade it animates constantly; against a blank fence it goes flat. Sizes run from 30cm to over four metres, spread fairly evenly.
