Acrylic Art

Cast acrylic is the only material on a wall that holds colour inside itself rather than on its surface. Light enters the block, travels through the tinted body and comes back out at the edges, which is why a cut acrylic form glows along its cuts in a way painted or printed work cannot imitate. Move past it and the colour shifts with the angle.

The pieces here are cut, layered, bent and polished rather than printed onto board. Blocks are stacked to build depth, sheets are formed under heat into curves and folds, and edges are flame-polished so they read as light rather than as a cut. Nine in ten pieces stand proud of the wall. A number combine acrylic with worked metal or leather, setting a hard reflective edge against something softer.

Acrylic wants light to work with. A piece opposite a window or under a directional spot will do things a piece on a dim internal wall will not, and the same panel can look flat or luminous depending on where it goes.
