Enamel Art

Enamel is glass fused to metal at around 800 degrees, and that is the whole reason to use it. The colour is not a coating that sits on the surface, it is vitrified into it, so it cannot fade, chalk or scratch off. Enamel signs from the 1920s are still legible; painted ones from the 1990s are not.

The technique is slow and the pieces are small for that reason. Powdered glass is laid onto worked metal, often over copper wire that separates the colours, and fired repeatedly, with each firing risking the piece. That is why this is a fifteen-piece collection rather than a large one.
