Description

A dragon sits back on its haunches, both forepaws raised and the jaws parted. The head is horned and crested and turned out. Two large membranous wings rise and fold behind it, ribbed like a bat's rather than feathered, and a scaled tail coils round the near flank. Overlapping scales cover neck, chest and haunch, and plated bands cross the belly. A very dark marble with a blue-grey cast, softly polished and cloudy rather than veined. It sits on a thin slab of the same stone. Very dark marble, near-black with a blue-grey cast, softly polished and cloudy in tone. The name we were given says granite and gargoyle; it is neither, and the note below says why.

Voids Behind Two Membranous Wings

A feathered wing is a solid tiered mass and can be thinned from the outside. A membranous one cannot: it is a thin sheet stretched between ribs, so the space BEHIND each rib has to be opened out from underneath, working blind into a gap that closes as the sheet approaches its final thickness. There are two of them here, folded rather than spread, which means each void is reached through a narrower opening than the last. So all the boring is done first, while both wings are still thick slabs that can take a tool bearing on them, and only then is either sheet thinned - working from inside the void outward, so the sheet gets thinner as the access gets worse rather than the other way round.

Raised forepaws and a seated haunch make this a warder, and warders belong where something is crossed - on the piers of a gate, at the bottom of a flight, at either hand of a door, closing the run of a low wall. At 130cm the horned head sits near chest height and the wings spread either side. That is a useful height for this particular beast, because the scales, the plated belly and the ribbed wings are all close work that means nothing at distance. It reads strongly as one of a pair. The stone is very dark and softly polished rather than mirrored, so unlike our fully polished blacks it holds its modelling in flat light - but it still wants something pale behind or beneath it.

A Threshold Beast at Chest Height

Eighteen to twenty weeks. Boring the voids behind two membranous wings comes before any of them is thinned. The slab is dressed and the beast roughed seated upon it, both wings held as thick slabs and both forepaws as heavy stubs. The voids behind the wing ribs are bored while those slabs are still full thickness. The seated body and haunches come down, then the horned head and crest. Each wing sheet is thinned from inside its void outward, the scales and plated bands cut after them, and the coiled tail freed last. Beast, wings and slab take no pin and no filler, the slab bedded dry below. Some 1,282kg for beast and slab, gantry-set and bedded onto a prepared footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Western beasts are few among animal sculptures, and gateway pieces suit garden statues.

Production Time

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
