White marble Chinese dragon walking with its back arched and a sphere in one claw
Walking Dragon White Marble Statue - 120cm $15,30000
Description

A dragon walks forward with its back arched high and its head turned outward. The jaws are open with the teeth showing, a spiked crest runs along the skull and long whiskers trail behind. A ridge of raised spines follows the spine to a flame-shaped tail lifted at the rear, and one clawed foreleg is closed on a plain sphere. It stands on a tall moulded plinth with a bead-and-reel band above and below. White marble, neutral and unmarked in both beast and plinth, matte throughout.

Bands Turned True Around Four Faces

The plinth under this dragon is the plainer half of the piece and the more exacting one. It carries a bead-and-reel band above and below, and a band like that has to close: the beads must run continuously around all four faces and meet themselves at the starting corner with a whole bead, not a fraction. That is a setting-out problem, not a carving one, and it is solved before any beast exists - the four faces are dressed dead true and dead square, the perimeter measured, and the bead spacing divided into it so that the count comes out whole. Get the faces even slightly out of square and no division works, because the four sides are no longer the lengths the arithmetic assumed. Only then is the dragon set out above.

We make two of this dragon and the difference is entirely in the plinth. The other carries a carved band of Chinese cloud scrolls; this one is plainly moulded, with a bead-and-reel band above and below a plain die and no ornament between them. That makes this the quieter of the two and the easier to place, since a plain moulded base argues with nothing around it - a terrace, a courtyard, an entrance hall, dressed stone or render. At 120cm overall the plinth carries the beast to about waist height, no higher. At just over a tonne it is the second-lightest piece here and an ordinary paved surface on a prepared pad will take it.

Two Dragons, and the Plinth Is the Difference

Fourteen to sixteen weeks. Turning the bead-and-reel bands true around all four faces opens the work, before the beast exists. The four plinth faces are dressed true and square, the perimeter measured and the bead spacing divided to come out whole at the starting corner, then both bands are cut. The dragon is roughed above, the arched back left solid until late because it spans a void. Spines, crest and whiskers are freed last, each standing clear on thin stone, and the sphere and reaching claw are finished together. No pins and no fillers in beast or plinth, and the plinth beds dry beneath. Only 1,008kg across dragon and plinth, gantry-borne and bedded onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Eastern beasts occupy a corner of animal sculptures, and traditional work fills classic sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
