About Our Bust Sculptures and Statues
The bust is sculpture at its most direct. There is no scene, no setting and no story to read, just a face held at the height of your own. That is why it has outlasted every other portrait form, and why a single well-made bust can carry a whole room.
Our collection gathers the form across every material we work in. In marble you will find the classical canon, Venus, Athena, Apollo, Medusa, the Roman emperors, Plato and Socrates, alongside unnamed classical male and female portraits and draped torsos. In cast bronze there are portrait heads, historical figures and military busts that take a hand-applied patina. There are also fibreglass and resin pieces in bolder, more contemporary treatments for interiors that want the form without the gravity.
Material changes the character completely. Marble carries light into the stone and holds fine detail in hair and drapery, which is why it suits the classical subjects so well. See the full range in marble busts and torsos. Bronze does the opposite, catching light on the surface and deepening with age, and our bronze busts and heads are cast and patinated entirely by hand.
Busts reward thoughtful placement more than almost any other sculpture. At eye level on a plinth or console they hold a hallway or study; grouped in threes they turn a shelf into a collection. Larger pieces sit comfortably outdoors in stone and bronze, which is why many appear in our garden statues range. For the classical subjects specifically, see our Greek and Roman statues, and for the wider figurative range our figurative sculptures.
Every bust we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Reach out if you would like help choosing a piece or commissioning a portrait of your own.
FAQs
What is a bust sculpture?
A bust is a sculpted portrait showing the head, neck and usually the shoulders and upper chest, mounted on a base. It has been the standard form of portrait sculpture since antiquity, used to record gods, rulers and thinkers, and it remains the most direct way to place a human presence in a room.
What materials are the bust sculptures made from?
We work mainly in real quarried marble and cast bronze, with fibreglass and resin for more contemporary pieces. Marble is carved by hand and holds very fine detail. Bronze is cast in a foundry and finished with a hand-applied patina, so no two are identical.
Are bust sculptures suitable for outdoors?
Marble, stone and cast bronze busts are all made for outdoor display and will weather gracefully, developing a patina over time. Fibreglass and resin pieces are better kept indoors or under cover.
How big are the busts?
Most sit between 50cm and 90cm, which places them at eye level on a plinth or console. Torsos and larger portraits run from 80cm to over 180cm. Every piece is made to order, so the scale can be adjusted to your space.
Can I commission a portrait bust?
Yes. We take portrait commissions from photographs or an existing likeness, in marble or bronze, and can advise on size, finish and base. Memorial portraits are among the most common requests we receive.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every bust is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, with free worldwide shipping.
