About Our Bronze Lion Statues
Lions guard things. That is the convention, it is four thousand years old, and it is the reason a lion works at a gateway where almost any other animal would look decorative. Cast in bronze at a pair of gateposts, the effect is immediate and does not depend on anyone knowing the history.
Pairs are the point and worth planning for. The convention is symmetrical, so a single lion at an entrance reads as half a set. Order pairs together where you can, so they are cast in the same batch and the patina matches, which is noticeable when two pieces stand a few metres apart.
The range covers recumbent lions in the European tradition, seated and standing guardians, Chinese guardian pairs with a paw on a brocade ball, and lionesses and prides. Browse the material-agnostic version in lion statues and the wider bronze work in bronze animal sculptures.
Scale should answer the architecture rather than the garden. A lion flanking steps or a gateway needs to read at the height of the opening it guards, which usually means larger than instinct suggests. Undersized guardians are the commonest mistake with this subject. See bronze garden statues and garden statues.
Every piece is cast to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch about matched pairs.
FAQs
Should I buy lions in pairs?
For a gate, entrance or flight of steps, yes. The convention is symmetrical and a single lion reads as an incomplete set. As a standalone piece on a lawn, one works perfectly well.
Why order a pair together?
So they are cast in the same batch and patinated at the same time. Patina varies slightly between batches, and the difference is noticeable when two pieces stand a few metres apart facing each other.
What is the difference between European and Chinese lions?
European lions are naturalistic, often recumbent or seated. Chinese guardian lions, sometimes called shishi or foo dogs, are stylised with curled manes and are traditionally placed as a pair with one paw on a ball.
What size should a guardian lion be?
Sized to the opening it guards rather than to the garden. Measure the gate or the steps, not the plinth. Undersized guardians are the most common mistake with this subject.
Can they stay outdoors?
Yes, permanently and without protection. Bronze patinates to green and brown over the years, which suits guardian figures particularly well.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is cast to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
