Grey granite rearing horse beside a red granite memorial tablet
Rearing Horse Red Granite Memorial - 180cm $24,89900
Description

A rearing horse stands beside a memorial tablet, one foreleg on its top edge. The mane streams back and the tail hangs low, and the animal is worked in smooth simplified volumes with the mane and tail cut in flowing locks. The tablet has a rough-hewn outer edge left as split stone, a large heart-shaped panel inset at its centre and an oval photograph recess above it - both supplied blank. Two chrome flower cups are set into the base slab at either end. Red granite in the tablet and base, grey granite in the horse, pink marble in the heart. The heart panel is supplied blank and is cut to whatever wording you send us.

A Horse That Leans on the Tablet

The horse rears with its near foreleg resting on the top edge of the tablet, and that contact is the whole engineering of the piece. It is not a decorative touch: a rearing animal has its weight forward of its own feet, and here the tablet takes the overhang. So the two are cut as separate stones and test-fitted against each other repeatedly while both are still at full thickness, because the bearing has to be a face and not a point - a rearing horse resting on a single high spot would concentrate its whole overhang on a few square centimetres of granite edge. The tablet edge is worked flat and true where the hoof lands, and only then is the rough-hewn outer edge split, because splitting stone near a finished bearing face is asking for trouble.

This is three stones in one memorial: red granite for the tablet and base, grey granite for the horse, and a pink marble panel let into the middle of the tablet. At 180cm the horse rears well above the head of anyone standing at the grave. Nothing on it is inscribed as supplied - the heart panel is blank and the oval recess is empty - so it arrives ready for your own wording and a portrait. The two chrome cups take standard flower holders. Granite is the most weather-resistant stone we work and needs nothing doing to it; the marble panel is the only part that will want an occasional wash.

Three Stones, and Two Blanks

Eighteen to twenty weeks. Rearing a horse off the edge of a tablet is what fixes the order of the work. The base slab is sawn and the tablet cut with its heart recess and oval sinking, then the bearing edge where the hoof lands is worked flat and proved. The horse is carved separately, the standing legs left heavy since they carry the animal, and the two are test-fitted before either is brought to size. The pink marble heart is cut to the recess. The rough outer edge is split last, and the chrome cups set in. Horse, tablet, heart panel and base are bedded dry, with no pin and no filler. Some 3,625kg with the base slab, craned onto a poured concrete foundation. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
