Description

Sun Wukong sits cross-legged, head bowed, his staff held across both knees. He wears lamellar armour with a wide belt, shoulder guards ending in beast-mask bosses and a petalled skirt frill, and the chest, shoulders and apron carry a dense rosette diaper. The hair rises from the crown in a flame. The staff has a chased ferrule at each end. He sits on a panelled pedestal on a stepped base. Marble under a full painted and gilded finish - white, gold, copper-brown and blue. The colour is laid on: the armour is painted, the borders and belt are gilded, and the face, ears and hands are painted a copper-brown. Only the pedestal is left as plain stone. It is a multicoloured finish in the proper sense - four colours over one figure.

A Second Trade, After the Carving

The carving is finished before any colour goes near it, and then a different set of hands takes over. That order matters more than it sounds. A painted surface hides nothing and forgives nothing: a plane that is slightly off reads as a fault in the paint rather than in the stone, and gilding along an edge shows every wobble in that edge at three times the length. So the carving is taken further than a plain stone piece would need - arrises trued, the diaper set out and sunk to an even depth, the frill undercut - and only then sealed, painted in flat coats and gilded along the borders and the belt. The staff is finished separately in a bright metallic and set last.

This is the only fully painted and gilded piece in the range, and it wants treating as painted work rather than as stone. At 150cm on its pedestal the bowed head comes to about chest height. Indoors it will hold as it is for years: a hall, a stair landing, a wide window bay, a lit alcove. Outdoors is a different question - sun fades pigment, frost lifts it off a wet surface, and gilding on an exposed edge goes first. If it goes outside it wants shelter, and it wants looking at once a year. None of that is a defect in the piece; it is what a painted finish is.

Paint Is Not Stone, and It Wears

Twenty-two to twenty-four weeks, and about a third of that is finishing. Painting and gilding a finished carving is a second trade after the first is done. The pedestal and stepped base are dressed first and proved level. The figure is roughed seated, the crossed legs and the mass of the armour left heavy, then the armour plates, belt, frill and shoulder bosses are cut and the rosette diaper set out and sunk. The head and the flame of hair come last in stone. Then the surface is sealed, painted and gilded, and the staff set in. Figure and pedestal are one piece of stone beneath the paint, with no pin in it. Some 1,969kg with the pedestal, craned across and bedded onto a prepared footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Painted work is unusual across animal sculptures, and seated figures fill classic sculptures.

Production Time

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
