About Our Bronze Busts
The portrait bust exists because the Romans worked out that a head and shoulders carries a likeness better than a full figure does. Remove the body and the viewer looks only at the face, which is why a bust reads as a person while a standing statue often reads as a type. Two thousand years later nobody has improved on the format.
Bronze suits it particularly well. Casting takes a likeness from a mould rather than committing it to a single block, so a portrait can be adjusted before it is fixed, and the metal holds detail in an eyelid or the corner of a mouth that stone loses. A hand-applied patina then does the rest, picking out the planes of a face as light moves across it.
The range covers classical emperors and philosophers, historical figures, anonymous portraits and contemporary heads. Browse the material-agnostic version in bust and torso sculptures, the marble equivalents in marble busts and torsos, and the wider bronze figurative work in bronze figures and statues.
A bust wants to sit at or slightly above eye level, on a plinth or a console rather than low down, because the format was designed to be looked up at very slightly. Most pieces here are suitable for outdoors as well as in. See bronze sculptures for the full bronze range.
Every piece is cast to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch about portrait commissions from photographs.
FAQs
Can you cast a portrait bust from photographs?
Yes, and it is one of our most common commissions. Photographs from several angles, including a clear profile and a head-on shot, make far more difference to the likeness than any other factor.
Why is bronze good for portraits?
Because casting takes the likeness from a mould rather than committing it to a single block, so it can be adjusted before it is fixed. Bronze also holds detail in an eyelid or the corner of a mouth that stone tends to lose.
How should a bust be displayed?
At or slightly above eye level, on a plinth or console rather than low down. The format was designed to be looked up at very slightly, and it loses authority when placed below the viewer.
Can bronze busts go outdoors?
Yes. Most of this collection is suitable for permanent exterior display and will patinate over the years, which suits portrait work particularly well.
What is the difference between a bust and a head?
A bust includes the shoulders and often part of the chest; a head stops at the neck. Both appear in this collection, and the bust format generally reads as a portrait while a head reads as a study.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is cast to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
