Bronze Horse Statues

The equestrian bronze is the benchmark by which foundries have been judged since antiquity. A rearing horse balances several hundred kilos on two hind legs and a tail, and getting that to stand while still looking like a living animal rather than a braced structure is the hardest problem in the discipline. Every serious foundry has had to solve it.

That is why this is by far the largest bronze subject we make. Poses run from rearing and galloping through trotting, standing and grazing, with mares and foals, heads and busts, and horse-and-rider groups including Roman and classical subjects. Some are set on stone or granite bases.

Bronze is not optional for most of these. A galloping horse with three hooves off the ground cannot be carved, only cast, which is why marble horses are almost always shown standing. A life-size horse stands around 250cm and needs open ground rather than a courtyard, plus a concrete pad or plinth. Access is usually the constraint rather than the garden, so measure gates and turning circles first. See bronze garden statues and life size bronze statues.
