About Our Bronze Horse Statues
The equestrian bronze is the benchmark by which foundries have been judged since antiquity. A rearing horse balances several hundred kilos on two hind legs and a tail, and getting that to stand while still looking like a living animal rather than a braced structure is the hardest problem in the discipline. Every serious foundry has had to solve it.
That is why this is by far the largest bronze subject we make. Poses run from rearing and galloping through trotting, standing and grazing, with mares and foals, heads and busts, and horse-and-rider groups including Roman and classical subjects. Some are set on stone or granite bases.
Bronze is not optional for most of these. A galloping horse with three hooves off the ground cannot be carved, only cast, which is why marble horses are almost always shown standing. Browse the material-agnostic range in horse statues and sculptures and the wider bronze animal work in bronze animal sculptures.
A life-size horse stands around 250cm and needs open ground rather than a courtyard, plus a concrete pad or plinth. Access is usually the constraint rather than the garden, so measure gates and turning circles first. See bronze garden statues and life size bronze statues.
Every piece is cast to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch to commission a particular breed, pose or equestrian portrait.
FAQs
Why are horse statues almost always bronze?
Because the poses demand it. A rearing or galloping horse carries its whole weight through one or two legs, which stone cannot support without a visible prop. That is why carved marble horses are nearly always shown standing or grazing.
How big is a life-size horse?
Around 250cm at the head, taller again for a rearing figure. At that scale it needs open ground to read properly, so a lawn or drive suits it better than a courtyard.
Do they need a foundation?
Yes. Anything at or near life size should stand on a concrete pad or a proper plinth, for stability in wind and to keep the hooves and base clear of soil and standing water.
Can you cast a specific horse?
Yes. Equestrian portraits from photographs, particular breeds and specific poses are all commissioned regularly, and memorial pieces for a named horse are among the most common.
Is this your whole horse range?
No, this is the bronze part. Our full horse collection also includes carved marble and stone pieces, and is larger.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is cast to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
