White marble peacock on a fluted column, tail carried down to the floor
Marble Peacock Statue - Two Designs - 220cm $29,21100
Description

Two entirely different peacock designs are offered here at one price. THE FIRST is a peacock perched on a slender fluted column, neck upright and crest erect, the long tail sweeping down the column and pooling on the floor in overlapping courses of eyed feathers. THE SECOND is a peacock forming the stem of a bird-bath: the body and tail flare down to a circular foot, and a wide shallow bowl sits above, carved on the outside with flowering branches and finished with a beaded rim. Either one is supplied at this price and you choose which. White marble, neutral and matte, with a fine sparse fleck and no crystalline sparkle. The fleck reads grey against the white.

One Price, Two Sets of Drawings

Most of what we make has one design and one way of being set out. This has two, and they are not variations - a bird on a column and a bird holding a bowl are different jobs with different risks. The column design puts its difficulty in the tail, which leaves the block and runs along the floor as separated courses of feathers, each one a thin cantilever. The bird-bath design puts its difficulty in the bowl: a wide shallow dish has to be turned true and left thick enough to hold water and thin enough to look right, on a stem that is a bird rather than a column. So the workshop sets out whichever you pick from its own drawings, and the lead time and the sequence differ between them.

The choice is not only a matter of looks. The column design is a sculpture and nothing else; the bird-bath design is a sculpture that holds water, which means birds, algae, winter draining and somewhere reasonably level and reachable to keep it. At 220cm either design stands well above the head of the person looking at it. Both suit a lawn, a courtyard, the end of a walk or a formal garden, and the bird-bath wants planting round it rather than open paving. If neither design is what you had in mind, a bespoke peacock can be carved to your own drawing and is quoted separately - this price covers these two designs only.

Choosing Between Them, or Neither

Twenty to twenty-four weeks, and it depends which design you choose. Two designs share one price, so the workshop sets out whichever one you pick. For the column design: the column and base are dressed first, the bird roughed above them, and the tail courses opened from the outermost inward and freed onto the floor last. For the bird-bath: the foot and the bird are roughed as one mass, the bowl blocked solid above and hollowed only when the stem beneath it is final, and the flowering branches cut last of all. Whichever design you take is one stone, unpinned, undowelled and unfilled. Some 6,214kg for whichever design you choose, craned onto a poured concrete footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Birds perch throughout animal sculptures, and water pieces belong with outdoor sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
