Marble teddy bear holding a toy rabbit beside a granite heart tablet
Teddy Bear and Heart Child Memorial - 100cm $12,65800
Description

A seated teddy bear holds a soft toy rabbit beside a heart-shaped tablet. The bear is carved with combed fur, a pale muzzle and stitched patches at the ear, arm, chest and foot, and it holds the rabbit against its chest with both paws. The heart stands against a plain backing panel and carries an oval photograph mount at its upper corner, supplied empty. Both parts stand on a two-step polished base whose front face takes a second line of wording. Marble in the bear and rabbit, dark speckled granite in the tablet, panel and base. The colour is laid on rather than quarried: the bear is finished a pale grey, its patches and the rabbit a strong blue, and the lettering gilded. The stone under all of it is a black granite and a pale grey marble. The tablet and the base band are cut to your own wording, not the sample shown.

Carving a Soft Toy Out of Stone

A stuffed toy is the hardest thing on this piece, and it is hard for a reason that sounds backwards: it has no bones. Every other subject we carve has a structure underneath that tells the carver where the form must go - a skull, a shoulder, a ribcage. A soft toy has only stuffing, so its shape is decided entirely by its seams and by where it is being squashed. That means the seams and the patches are not decoration added at the end; they are the drawing, and they are set out on the block before the body is rounded. Get a seam a few millimetres out of place and the limb it runs down stops reading as fabric and starts reading as stone pretending to be fabric.

Two things on this memorial are supplied empty and are yours to fill: the oval photograph mount at the top of the heart, and the wording. At 100cm this is a knee-to-waist piece, met by looking down into it. The sample wording is a studio mock-up and is not what we cut - the tablet and the base band are lettered to whatever you send us, in whatever depth and finish you prefer. The applied colour is worth a thought before you order: paint and gilding on an outdoor memorial want checking every year or two, and a plainer version in the natural stones can be quoted if you would rather not have that.

What Arrives Blank, and What You Choose

Fourteen to sixteen weeks. Carving a soft toy in stone means every seam and patch is cut, not stitched. The granite tablet, backing panel and two-step base are cut and polished first and proved level, since everything else beds onto them. The bear and the rabbit are then carved from marble, seams and patches set out on the block before the bodies are rounded, the muzzle and paws cut last. The oval mount is sunk. Then the pieces are sealed, the colour laid on and the lettering gilded. Bear, rabbit, tablet and base are separate stones, bedded dry and unpinned. Some 622kg on its two-step base, bedded onto a prepared concrete foundation. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Child memorials sit apart in headstones and memorials, and marble ones in marble headstones.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
