About Our Bronze Sculptures
Bronze is the material sculpture keeps returning to, and it has had four thousand years to prove itself. It casts fine detail, it is strong enough to hold a rearing horse on two legs, and left outside it does not decay but changes, drawing a green and brown patina across the surface that most collectors come to prefer to the new metal.
Every piece here is cast rather than moulded in a substitute, then chased and patinated by hand. That last stage is why two casts of the same model are never identical: the patina is chemistry applied by eye, and it responds to the metal, the heat and the hand. Roughly a quarter of the collection sets bronze against stone or granite for a base or a contrast.
Figures and animals divide the range almost evenly. On the figurative side there are classical gods and emperors, religious subjects, dancers, workers and portrait busts; on the animal side deer, hares, big cats, bulls, birds and life-size horses and elephants. Browse those separately in bronze animal sculptures, bronze busts and heads and Greek and Roman statues.
This is the largest work we make. Seven in ten pieces stand over 160cm and a number pass four metres, because bronze is the only material that will hold that scale outdoors indefinitely. Nearly all of it is made for the open air, which is why so much of the collection also sits within our garden statues and life size and large statues ranges.
Every bronze we make is cast to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch if you would like advice on scale and siting, or to commission a piece to your own brief.
FAQs
Is this real bronze?
Yes. Every piece in this collection is cast bronze, not resin, cold-cast composite or bronze-effect finish. It is chased and patinated by hand after casting, which is why no two pieces are identical.
What is a patina and will it change?
The patina is the coloured surface layer, applied by hand with heat and chemistry after casting. Outdoors it continues to develop over years into deeper greens and browns. That is normal and is generally considered to improve the piece rather than damage it.
Can bronze sculptures stay outside all year?
Yes. Bronze is made for permanent outdoor display and handles rain, frost and sun without protection. If you want to slow the patina, a coat of microcrystalline wax once a year will do it. If you like where it is heading, leave it alone.
How large do they get?
Seven in ten pieces here stand over 160cm and several pass four metres. Bronze holds that scale in a way no other material we work in can, particularly for figures in motion where the weight has to carry through a small contact point.
Do large bronzes need a foundation?
Anything life-size or above should stand on a concrete pad or a proper plinth, both for stability and to keep the base clear of standing water and soil. We can advise on fixing and weight for a specific piece.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every bronze is cast to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
