About Our Balloon Dog Sculptures

The balloon dog is the most recognisable object in contemporary art, and the joke at the centre of it still works. A twisted party balloon, a thing made in seconds and gone by morning, rendered at monumental scale in a material that will outlast the room it stands in. The tension between how it looks and what it is made of is the whole piece.

Ours are built in fibreglass over a steel armature and finished in high-gloss automotive lacquer, polished to the mirror finish the form demands. That surface is the difficulty: any flaw in the underlying shape shows immediately in the reflection, so the sanding and polishing take far longer than the moulding. The result reflects the room around it and changes completely as you move past it.

The range covers the full spectrum of colours, from chrome silver and gold through blue, pink, purple, orange and green, with matt finishes alongside the mirror ones. They sit within the wider pop art sculptures range, alongside our Iconify sculptures and the naturalistic work in dog statues.

Scale is a real decision with this piece. Four in ten are over 160cm, which is the size that produces the double-take a balloon dog is meant to produce, and they are made for indoors or out. What are the balloon dog sculptures made from?

Fibreglass laid over a steel armature, then finished in high-gloss automotive lacquer and polished. The steel carries the load and the fibreglass takes the form, which is what allows the large sizes to stand on slim legs.

Can they go outdoors?

Yes. The lacquer finish is automotive grade and handles weather. In a fully exposed position, expect the gloss to need occasional attention over the years, much as a car finish does. Keep them out of constant direct sun if you want the colour to stay at its brightest.

What sizes do they come in?

From around 30cm to over 160cm, with four in ten pieces in the largest band. The oversized versions are the ones that produce the effect the form is known for. Any size can be made to order.

Can I have a custom colour?

Yes. Because the finish is sprayed rather than moulded in, we can match a specific colour or a chrome, matt or metallic finish. Send us a reference and we will confirm what is achievable.

How do I clean a mirror finish?

A soft microfibre cloth and warm water, dried immediately to avoid spotting. Never use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads or solvent, all of which will scratch or dull the lacquer permanently.
