About Our Marble Busts and Torsos
Few objects hold a room quite like a marble bust. It is the oldest form of portraiture we have, and it still does what it always did: fixes a face at eye level and asks you to look. Our collection gathers the subjects that have been carved for two thousand years, alongside torsos and fragments that treat the body as pure sculptural form.
The range runs from the familiar to the rare. You will find Venus, Athena in both crested and plumed helmets, Apollo, Diana, Medusa, Zeus and Psyche, the philosophers Plato and Socrates, Julius Caesar and a series of Roman emperors and generals, and Michelangelo's David. Alongside them sit classical male and female busts without a named subject, draped torsos, and torso fragments finished either polished or antiqued.
Marble is the reason these pieces read as they do. It takes a fine edge, holds detail in the hair and drapery that softer stone loses, and carries light into the surface rather than bouncing it off. Each block is carved by hand, so the veining is never repeated and no two busts are identical. Explore the wider range in marble sculptures and statues, or see the same subjects cast in metal in our bronze busts and heads.
Scale is yours to set. A 50cm bust on a console reads as a considered object, while a 130cm torso becomes the anchor of a room. Marble stands up to the open air as well, so these pieces work on a terrace or in a courtyard as readily as indoors, which is why many sit within our garden statues range. They also form part of the broader bust sculptures collection and our Greek and Roman statues.
Every marble bust we make is carved to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Take your time exploring the collection, and reach out if you would like guidance on choosing a piece or commissioning a portrait bust of your own.
FAQs
What is a marble bust sculpture?
A bust is a sculpted portrait that shows the head, neck and usually the shoulders and upper chest, mounted on a base or socle. It is the oldest surviving form of portrait sculpture, used by the Greeks and Romans to record rulers, philosophers and gods, and revived in the Renaissance. A torso, by contrast, shows the body without head or limbs, treating the human form as pure shape.
Are marble busts suitable for outdoors?
Yes. Natural marble is quarried stone and stands up to rain, frost and sun, which is why classical marble has survived outdoors for centuries. It will weather gently over time, softening in tone and taking on a patina many people prefer. For a crisp white finish indefinitely, keep the piece under cover.
How big are the marble busts and torsos?
Most busts run between 50cm and 90cm, which suits a console, plinth or shelf at eye level. Torsos and full figures range from 80cm to well over 180cm. Because every piece is carved to order, the scale can be adjusted up or down to suit your space.
What marble do you use?
We work in real quarried marble, never reconstituted stone or marble effect. The natural veining means every piece is unique, and it is the reason fine detail in hair and drapery holds so well. Colour and character vary by block, so no two busts are quite the same.
Can you carve a bust of a specific person?
Yes. Portrait commissions are among the most rewarding work we do, whether from photographs, an existing likeness or a memorial brief. Our full customisation service also lets you specify size, finish and base for any piece in the collection.
How are the marble busts made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is carved by hand to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, with free worldwide shipping.
