About Our Living Room Art

The living room is where art is looked at for the most hours and judged the least kindly. It is the room people spend evenings in, show visitors, and rearrange most often, so a piece here has to work in daylight and lamplight, from a seated position and a standing one, and still be interesting in three years. Everything else is easier.

Above the sofa is the canonical wall and the sizing rule is firm: around two thirds the width of the sofa, with the bottom edge 20cm to 25cm above the back. Most people go too small, which leaves the wall looking unfinished no matter how good the piece is. The chimney breast is the other natural position, and there scale is set by the opening rather than the furniture.

This is the room that justifies a statement piece, and the room where dimensional work pays for itself, because you see it under changing light all evening. Almost nine in ten pieces in our range are 80cm or larger and nearly four in ten pass 160cm, which is what a modern open-plan living room needs. Browse the dimensional and material ranges in 3D wall art, metal wall art and wood wall art.

If the room is hard-surfaced, and most modern ones are, timber and leather will take some of the echo out of it as well as softening the look. If it is a period room with a lot of pattern already, the restrained end of the range works better. See abstract art and wall sculptures for pieces that come properly off the wall.

Every piece we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch if you would like help sizing a piece to a particular sofa or chimney breast.

FAQs

What size art goes above a sofa?

Around two thirds the width of the sofa, with the bottom edge 20cm to 25cm above the back cushions. For a three-seater that is usually 120cm to 150cm of artwork. Going smaller is the single most common mistake in this room.

One large piece or a group?

One large piece almost always reads better above a sofa, and it is less work to hang well. If you do group, keep the gaps tight, align the group as a single rectangle and treat the whole arrangement as one piece when sizing.

How high should it hang?

Centre at roughly eye level for a standing adult, around 155cm to 160cm from the floor, unless it sits above furniture in which case the gap above the sofa governs. In a room with very high ceilings, resist the urge to hang higher to fill the wall.

Will textured art help with the acoustics?

A little. Timber and leather panels absorb rather than reflect, so a large piece takes some of the hardness out of a room with a wooden or tiled floor. It is not acoustic treatment, but it is noticeably better than glass or a print.

What works in an open-plan room?

Scale up. Open plan means longer viewing distances and fewer walls, so one substantial piece per zone works better than several medium ones. Nearly four in ten pieces in our range pass 160cm for exactly this.

How is it made, and how long does it take?
