Living Room Art

The living room is where art is looked at for the most hours and judged the least kindly. It is the room people spend evenings in, show visitors, and rearrange most often, so a piece here has to work in daylight and lamplight, from a seated position and a standing one, and still be interesting in three years. Everything else is easier.

Above the sofa is the canonical wall and the sizing rule is firm: around two thirds the width of the sofa, with the bottom edge 20cm to 25cm above the back. Most people go too small, which leaves the wall looking unfinished no matter how good the piece is. The chimney breast is the other natural position, and there scale is set by the opening rather than the furniture.

This is the room that justifies a statement piece, and the room where dimensional work pays for itself, because you see it under changing light all evening. Almost nine in ten pieces in our range are 80cm or larger and nearly four in ten pass 160cm, which is what a modern open-plan living room needs. If the room is hard-surfaced, and most modern ones are, timber and leather will take some of the echo out of it as well as softening the look.
