Couchant Lion With a Cherub Marble Statue - 170cm $26,69900
Description

Couchant across a moulded pedestal, a lion carries a winged cherub climbing at its shoulder. One small arm reaches into the mane and a leg is braced across the lion's foreleg. The lion's head is turned outward with the jaws parted and the mane cut in deep waves; the cherub is carved at about half the lion's scale, with its own small feathered wing behind it. A large acanthus scroll rises behind the pair and a garland with tassels is draped along the front edge. All of it sits on a moulded pedestal with a sunk field and a stepped base. The stone is a white marble with grey veining through the pedestal.

A Second Figure at Half the Scale

Two figures in one group are carved to different rules. The lion is read from twenty paces and its forms are cut broad and deep so they hold at that distance. The cherub is half the size and will only ever be looked at from close to, so the same depth of cut on it would make it coarse - a child's face with a lion's shadows in it. Its features are therefore worked shallower in absolute terms and its limbs finished smoother, and the mane it grips is cut deeper around the small hand than elsewhere so the hand reads as gripping rather than resting. Getting the cherub to look soft against an animal cut hard is the whole difficulty of the group.

This is not a piece to put at the end of a drive. The lion would carry that far, but the cherub, the garland tassels and the acanthus scroll are all close-range carving and the group is only half itself at a distance. Put it where people pass within a pace or two: a courtyard, a terrace beside seating, a hall or an orangery, the turn of a path. At 170cm on its pedestal the cherub sits at about eye level, which is where it wants to be. White marble with grey veining reads well against brick, render and dark planting.

A Group That Rewards Coming Close

Twenty-three to twenty-five weeks. Blocking the pedestal and its sunk field opens the work, and the couchant group is roughed above it with cherub and scroll left solid. The lion is brought to near-finish first, because the cherub is cut into the space the lion leaves and not the other way round. The mane is left deliberately deep wherever the cherub's small hand will grip it. The cherub is then carved out of its reserved block, head and face last, at a shallower relative depth than anything on the animal. The acanthus scroll behind is separated after that, and the garland and its tassels are the final work - they hang clear of the front edge and cannot be leaned on once free. Lion, cherub, scroll and garland all emerge from one block, unpinned and unfilled. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Some 2,867kg divided between group and pedestal, craned in order onto a poured concrete footing.

Allied figure groups belong to animal sculptures, and classical carving to classic sculptures.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
