Winged Sphinx Beige Marble Statue - 80cm $12,51800
Description

A winged sphinx sits couchant, a woman's head and shoulders on a lion's body. The forelegs are extended straight in front with the paws spread, the head wears a soft cap over centre-parted waved hair with a long plaited tress falling forward over each shoulder, and one wing rises and sweeps back from each shoulder in tiered feathers. A shaped cartouche hangs on the breast carrying a lion mask in high relief. It sits on a thin rectangular slab. A single beast on its own slab is what this price buys. Warm apricot-beige marble, cream in its paler passages, rust-red veining within.

Two Tresses That Must Match Across a Pair

The plaited tresses falling over each shoulder are the finest work on this sphinx and the reason a pair is harder than twice one piece. Each plait is a rope of separately cut strands, undercut clear of the breast behind it, and there are four of them across a facing pair - two on each beast. The eye compares them all: a plait with strands a little coarser than its opposite number, or stopping a centimetre short of it, is invisible on one figure alone and immediately obvious when the two stand together. So on a pair the four are cut in rotation rather than one figure at a time, a few strands on each in turn, and none is finished until all four can be seen side by side.

A couchant winged sphinx is a threshold figure, and at 80cm it is a low one - which suits it to the places a tall guardian would overwhelm: the ends of a low wall, either side of steps or a gate, along a balustrade, flanking a doorway, on pier caps. At 80cm the head sits at about thigh height, so the face is met by looking down. That low height matters for the carving too: the breast cartouche and both plaits sit well below eye level, so they are seen properly rather than lost. The apricot-beige stone with its rust-red veining holds against brick, render, gravel or dark planting on hue alone, and will not sit quietly beside white marble.

A Threshold Pair at Low Height

Fourteen to sixteen weeks for one, and a pair is cut together rather than in sequence. Cutting the two plaited tresses to match across a mirrored pair is the finest work here. The slab is dressed and the beast roughed couchant upon it, both wings held as thick slabs and the extended forelegs as heavy bars. The lion body and haunches come down first, then the head and shoulders. Each wing is taken down a little at a time, turn and turn about, and the feather courses are laid outward from where they spring. The breast cartouche and its mask are carved late, and the plaited tresses last of all. Beast, wings and slab come from one block, with nothing applied or filled. Only 299kg for one beast and slab, which four people bed onto a prepared footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
