About Our Porcelain Art
Porcelain is the only ceramic that transmits light. Fired thin enough, the body becomes translucent, so a lamp behind a pierced porcelain panel produces a glow through the material rather than a light shining past it. That property is why porcelain has been used for lanterns and screens for a thousand years and why so much of this collection is illuminated.
The making is unforgiving. Porcelain shrinks considerably in the kiln and warps if the thickness is uneven, so a large flat panel is genuinely difficult to produce and a pierced one more so. Every piece here is fired, and around a third combines porcelain with worked metal or a canvas ground for contrast between the fired surface and something matt.
The work is contemporary and largely abstract, with a strong geometric strand and a smaller botanical and landscape group. Nearly six in ten pieces are dimensional. Browse the illuminated work in LED and neon art, the related fired material in ceramic art, and the wider relief range in 3D wall art.
Scale is larger than most people expect for a fired material: nine in ten pieces are 80cm or larger and nearly four in ten pass 160cm. Fix into solid substrate with anchors rated above the weight, and site pieces away from anywhere they might be knocked, since fired porcelain cannot be repaired invisibly. See the wider range in wall art and wall decor.
Every porcelain piece we make is built and fired to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch if you would like advice on lighting a translucent panel.
FAQs
Why is porcelain used for illuminated work?
It is the only ceramic that transmits light. Fired thin, the body becomes translucent, so light from behind glows through the material rather than shining past it. Nothing synthetic reproduces that quality convincingly.
How is it different from ceramic?
Porcelain is fired hotter, vitrifies fully and can be worked much thinner, which is what gives it translucency and a harder, whiter body. Ceramic stays opaque and carries its interest in the glaze instead.
How large do the panels get?
Larger than most people expect for a fired material. Nine in ten pieces are 80cm or larger and nearly four in ten pass 160cm, which is difficult to achieve because porcelain shrinks and warps in the kiln.
How should a translucent panel be lit?
From behind or within, which is how the illuminated pieces are built. Front lighting makes porcelain read as a plain white panel and loses the effect the material is there for.
Is it fragile?
Strong in place but brittle on impact, and a fired surface cannot be repaired invisibly. Fix into a solid substrate with anchors rated above the weight, and site pieces clear of circulation routes.
How is it made, and how long does it take?
Every piece is built and fired to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
