About Our Modern Art
Modern here means made now, for rooms built now. Not a period style borrowed from the twentieth century, but work that answers the way contemporary interiors actually look: open plan, high ceilinged, hard floored, and short of the walls and mouldings that older rooms used to carry the eye.
That shapes what the range is. Clean edges rather than ornament, restrained palettes that sit with plaster and concrete rather than fighting them, and a strong bias toward relief, because a flat print looks thin against a large modern wall. Timber, cast acrylic, worked metal and leather do most of the work, often combined in one piece. Browse by material in metal wall art, wood wall art and acrylic art.
Most of the collection is non-representational, with a run of geometric compositions and a smaller strand of landscape and botanical work. There are distinct Scandinavian, retro and illuminated groups within it, and the quieter Japanese-influenced end sits in our Nordic art and Zen art ranges. For the illuminated pieces see LED and neon art.
Scale is the practical difference between a modern room and an older one. Nine in ten pieces here run 80cm or larger and nearly four in ten pass 160cm, because a modern wall is usually bigger, emptier and more brightly lit than a period one. These are interior works, best in living rooms, offices and hallways under directional light.
Every piece we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. FAQs
What is the difference between modern and contemporary art?
In art history, modern usually means roughly 1860 to 1970 and contemporary means work made since. In practice most people searching for modern wall art mean the second, and that is what this collection is: work made now, in a contemporary design language, for current interiors.
What suits a modern interior?
Clean edges, restrained tonal ranges and real texture. Open-plan rooms with plaster or concrete surfaces tend to swallow flat printed work, so relief and dimension read better. Scale up rather than down, and let one piece carry a wall instead of hanging several.
What materials do you use?
Timber, cast acrylic, worked metal, leather, canvas and mixed media, frequently combined within a single piece. Everything is cut, carved and assembled by hand rather than printed, which is why the surfaces carry genuine depth.
How big should modern wall art be?
Bigger than you think. Nine in ten pieces here are 80cm or larger and nearly four in ten pass 160cm, because contemporary walls are typically larger and emptier than period ones. A piece that looks generous on screen often looks small once hung.
Can it go outdoors?
No. This collection is made for interiors. For exterior walls, terraces and gardens see our outdoor wall art and decor range, which is selected for weather exposure.
How is it made, and how long does it take?
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
