Modern Art

Modern here means made now, for rooms built now. Not a period style borrowed from the twentieth century, but work that answers the way contemporary interiors actually look: open plan, high ceilinged, hard floored, and short of the walls and mouldings that older rooms used to carry the eye.

That shapes what the range is. Clean edges rather than ornament, restrained palettes that sit with plaster and concrete rather than fighting them, and a strong bias toward relief, because a flat print looks thin against a large modern wall. Most of the collection is non-representational, with a run of geometric compositions and a smaller strand of landscape and botanical work. There are distinct Scandinavian, retro and illuminated groups within it, and the quieter Japanese-influenced end sits in our Nordic art and Zen art ranges. Scale is the practical difference between a modern room and an older one. Nine in ten pieces here run 80cm or larger and nearly four in ten pass 160cm, because a modern wall is usually bigger, emptier and more brightly lit than a period one. These are interior works, best in living rooms, offices and hallways under directional light.
