Marble Sculptures & Statues

Marble does something no other stone does with light. It does not simply reflect it, it lets it travel a short way into the surface before scattering it back, which is why carved skin and drapery look soft rather than hard. That single optical property is why the classical world chose it and why nothing has replaced it since.

Everything here is real quarried marble, carved by hand. Not reconstituted stone, not marble effect, not resin with dust in it. The veining is a record of the block it came from, so no two pieces match, and the detail that survives in hair, feathers and folded cloth is only possible because the stone takes a fine edge without crumbling.

The range is overwhelmingly classical. Angels and cherubs make up the largest group, followed by animals, portrait busts and female figures, with Venus, David, the Three Graces and the Roman emperors among the recognisable subjects. Marble belongs outdoors as much as in. It weathers slowly, softening in tone and gathering a patina rather than breaking down, which is how classical statuary has survived in European gardens for centuries. Nearly the whole collection is suitable for exterior display, and much of it sits within our garden statues range. Sizes run from 30cm to over four metres.
