Art furniture has to pass two tests that neither a sculpture nor a table has to pass alone. It has to hold a drink level and it has to be worth looking at when it is empty. Most pieces sold under the label fail one or the other, usually by being a sculpture with a sheet of glass balanced on it.

The work here is designed as furniture from the outset. Console and side tables where the base is the piece, seating built as form rather than upholstered around a frame, shelving and plinths, and lighting where the fitting is sculptural rather than decorated. Fibreglass and resin do most of the making, with steel and timber where the piece has to carry real load.

Scale and stability matter more than in any other range. A base has to be heavy enough not to tip when someone leans on the top, and a surface has to sit level.
