About Our Iron Art

Wrought iron is the oldest decorative metalwork there is, and it still does something machine-cut steel cannot: it carries the mark of being bent by hand. A forged scroll has a slight irregularity along its curve, a slight thickening where the heat was, and that is what separates real ironwork from a stamped panel.

Almost the whole collection is genuine ironwork, most of it combined with something else. Two thirds set iron against another metal, a quarter against cast acrylic and a quarter against leather, so the eye reads a hard drawn line against a softer surface. Around six in ten pieces are open filigree work, where the wall behind becomes part of the composition and the shadow does as much as the metal.

Botanical subjects are the largest group by far, at more than a quarter of the range: lotus discs, vine scrolls, leaf and branch forms, and stylised flowers. The rest is geometric and abstract, with a small illuminated group. White and gold lead the finishes, with blue and green behind. Filigree work wants a plain wall behind it and light from one side, because the shadow is half the piece. Nearly all of it runs 80cm or larger. FAQs

Is this real wrought iron?

Yes. The pieces are forged and bent by hand rather than stamped or laser-cut, which is why the curves carry slight irregularities. That hand-worked quality is the difference between ironwork and a pressed steel panel.

Will iron wall art rust?

Not indoors. Pieces are powder-coated or painted, which seals the metal. In a damp or exterior position the coating will eventually fail at an edge and rust will start there, so keep these pieces in a dry interior.

What is filigree ironwork?

Open decorative metalwork where the pattern is pierced rather than solid, so the wall behind shows through. Around six in ten pieces here are made this way, which is why the wall colour and the lighting matter as much as the piece itself.

How should it be lit?

From one side. Open ironwork casts a shadow pattern that doubles the composition, and directional light raking across the piece is what produces it. Flat frontal light loses half the effect.

How do I clean it?

A soft dry brush is best for filigree, as a cloth catches on the openwork. Avoid water on painted and powder-coated finishes where it can sit in a joint, and never use abrasives.
