About Our Cardboard Art
Cardboard is an unlikely material for a wall and a very good one. Cut on edge it shows its corrugation as a fine ribbed line, layered it stacks into deep relief at almost no weight, and it takes a curve that rigid board cannot. It is also the only material we work in that is entirely recyclable at the end of its life.
Weight is the practical advantage. A metre-wide cardboard relief weighs a fraction of the same piece in timber or metal, which means it can hang on plasterboard, on a stud wall in a rented flat, or above a bed without the fixing anxiety that comes with a heavy panel.
The work is contemporary and largely abstract, with geometric and organic forms built from cut and stacked layers. Browse the related relief work in 3D wall art and mixed media art, and the other light material in textile and fabric wall art.
Keep it dry. Cardboard is the most humidity-sensitive material in our catalogue, so avoid kitchens, bathrooms and any exterior position, and keep pieces away from radiators where the board can warp. In a normal dry interior it is stable and long-lasting. See wall art and wall decor.
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch if you would like help sizing a piece.
FAQs
Is cardboard art durable?
In a dry interior, yes, and for many years. What it will not tolerate is humidity, so it is unsuitable for kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere exterior, and should be kept away from radiators where the board can warp.
Why choose cardboard over timber or metal?
Weight. A metre-wide cardboard relief weighs a fraction of the same piece in another material, so it hangs on plasterboard or a stud wall without the fixing concerns a heavy panel brings.
What does it look like up close?
Cut on edge, cardboard shows its corrugation as a fine ribbed line, which becomes the surface texture of the piece. Layered and stacked, it builds deep relief with visible strata.
Is it recyclable?
Yes, entirely, which makes it the only material in our catalogue of which that is true. That is a genuine consideration for anyone weighing the environmental cost of a large decorative object.
How do I clean it?
A dry soft brush only, worked along the layers rather than across them. Never use water or any liquid cleaner, since board absorbs and will swell.
How is it made, and how long does it take?
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
