About Our Astronaut Sculptures
The astronaut is the most useful figure in contemporary sculpture, and the reason is the helmet. A visor hides the face, which removes age, gender and expression from the piece and leaves a human form anyone can project onto. That is why an astronaut works in a childs bedroom, a bar and a boardroom, which almost no other figurative subject manages.
Nearly the whole collection is cast resin, finished in sprayed lacquer, chrome and metallic. Resin holds fine detail in the suit ribbing and the visor seal, and takes a polished finish that turns the helmet into a mirror. A third of the range pairs the figure with balloon forms, and there is a substantial run holding balloon dogs, hearts and planets.
Poses do a lot of the work: seated and thinking, floating, walking, holding or riding something. The scale runs from 30cm shelf pieces to over 160cm, with the 80cm to 130cm band the most popular. Browse the wider ranges in pop art sculptures, wall sculptures for the wall-mounted versions, and figurative sculptures.
These are interior pieces almost without exception, because a sprayed and polished resin finish does not survive permanent weather. A mirrored helmet also wants something worth reflecting, so place one where it picks up a window or a lamp rather than a blank corner. See indoor sculptures and statues and decorative sculptures.
Every astronaut sculpture we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch if you would like a custom colour or a size we do not list.
FAQs
What are the astronaut sculptures made from?
Almost all are cast resin with a sprayed lacquer, chrome or metallic finish. Resin holds the fine detail in the suit ribbing and visor seal, and takes the polish that turns a helmet into a mirror.
Can they go outdoors?
No. Ninety-nine per cent of the range is rated for interiors only, because a sprayed and polished resin finish fades and chalks in permanent sun and rain.
What sizes are available?
From 30cm to over 160cm, with the 80cm to 130cm band the most popular. The larger sizes work as floor pieces beside seating; the smaller ones suit a shelf, console or desk.
Why are astronauts so popular as sculpture?
The visor hides the face, which removes age, gender and expression. That leaves a human figure anyone can project onto, which is why the subject works in a child's room, a bar and a boardroom alike.
Do you make wall-mounted versions?
Yes. Astronauts are the largest subject in our wall sculpture range, usually part-emerging from the panel as though passing through the wall. See our wall sculptures collection.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
