Two white marble dolphins diving over a tall column of carved breaking water
Two Dolphins on a Wave White Marble Statue - 180cm $25,66400
Description

Two dolphins dive head-down over a tall column of carved water, cut as one group. The nearer animal arches across the front with its beak dropping to the foot and its flukes lifted clear at the top; the farther one crosses behind it, both pectoral fins swept back and the dorsal fins standing proud. The water below is cut as tall swept crests with tightly curled foam scrolls, hollowed and undercut, spreading to a rounded foot. Both animals are included in this price. Brilliant white marble, neutral and unmarked, polished on the animals and crisper on the foam.

Two Animals Crossing, Out of One Mass

Two separate dolphins could be set a hand's width further apart at the last minute if the composition asked for it. These cannot. They cross each other, they are cut from one block, and the space between them is not a gap left over but a void that has to be carved - reached into from both sides with the two bodies already in place around it, and finished blind where the tools will not go. That void is opened while both animals are still oversized and can survive a knock, and both are brought down to their final section afterwards, working outward from between them. It also means the whole group is set out once and never revised: get the crossing wrong and there is no second position to move either animal into.

The carved water climbs almost half the height of this piece, which makes it read as a fountain even standing dry. At 180cm the upper animal's flukes top the piece, well above the eye. It is at its best where real water answers the carved kind - a pool surround, the head of a cascade, a courtyard tank - and it is one of the few pieces in this range that looks entirely right standing in shallow water rather than beside it. The foam scrolls are the finest carving on it and they are undercut on every side, so give it light from more than one direction if you can; a single hard source flattens the crests into a white mass.

A Fountain Piece Without the Plumbing

Twenty to twenty-two weeks. Laying out both animals on one mass governs everything, since neither can be shifted a finger's width once roughed. The wave column is blocked as one solid mass on its rounded foot and stays solid while both animals are roughed above and across it. The void between them is opened early, with both bodies still oversized, then the two are brought to section from between them outward. Beaks, pectoral fins and dorsal fins are freed late, each standing clear on thin stone. The curled foam crests are hollowed and undercut at the very end. Both animals and the wave beneath come from one block, with no pin and no filler. Some 3,403kg as one mass, craned across and bedded onto a poured concrete footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Sea creatures swim through animal sculptures, and unmarked white stone fills marble sculptures.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
